Cosplayers are most likely to practice sustainability if there are more content about sustainable practices and support from the cosplay community (92%)
62% of cosplayers have difficulty in storing their used props and materials
Based from the survey we conducted, there was about 39 cosplayers who proclaimed that they had difficulty storing their used cosplay items. This becomes an issue especially in terms of storage and quality of preservation since most cosplayers have limited spaces within their homes.
Anca Lenta from StorageCafe provides a detailed guide on how to properly store your cosplays! Check out their article!
Cosplaying has been a huge contributor in defying gender norms in the world! Based from our interviews, 75% of cosplayers are open to cosplaying any gender of characters, while 13% intentionally choose to cosplay the other gender. And actually, a study by Yuchen Yang compares cosplaying as a sort of extension or alternative to doing drag.
The fun point here is that cosplay highly involves gender-play, contributing to the theory that gender is an artwork to be admired and created by anyone.
From our survey, this is the highest estimated amount 2% of cosplayers spend on their cosplays. Contrariwise, 37% of these cosplayers only spend to at least Php2000 or even nothing at all. These vast differences between spending histories varies depending on the practices these cosplayers do during their cosplay processes.
Additionally, this also showcases the differences between the spending habits of hobbyist cosplayers and professionals(those who profit from cosplaying).

Eco-cosplaying isn’t just about using recycled materials — it’s about creativity and smart choices. Learn how to manage your cosplay budget effectively!
We know cosplaying brings a lot of thrill and you want to just get into it without thinking about it, but it is more sustainable for you to start cosplanning (cosplay planning) and making sure that no energy, resources, and time is wasted.
You can follow and/or modify the cosplanning steps below! (Inspired by the cosplayers of Louisiana’s presentation on the matter)
Decide on the character you wish to transform into. It could be someone you’ve always wanted to portray, what your friends want you to cosplay, or it could be someone random–to amp up the fun!
Think of whether or not you will be cosplaying just for pure fun, hang out with your friends, and just walk around, OR will you be joining a cosplay competition, judge, or an event that will require you to maximize your cosplays’ showcase-ability.
After deciding on the complexity level of your cosplay, start looking for inspirations and references for you to start initially visualizing what materials and crafting processes you’re going to do.
Now that you have your initial brainstorming, you can now plan your production timeline and cosplay event dates. This is to make sure that you can follow through with your plans and make it on time for the events you will be going to.
Create drawings, mock-ups, and sample poses for your cosplay. If you need patterns for sewing, you can start making or buying them. Make sure you plan even the littlest of movements that you will do, so you can be prepared for emergencies to come.
Here you make some of the most important decisions in your life- especially if you are a practicing eco-cosplayer. Seeking out quality yet inexpensive materials will be a challenge, but this is why our Cosplay Advice forum exists *wink *wink
It’s your creativity’s time to shine! Or it’s suffering time…but it depends on how you see it! (It can be both :,>) Watch tutorials, ask for help, and ensure maximum quality with the materials you have gathered!
